What is a Gunite Pool?
Are you thinking about installing a new swimming pool in your backyard? There are three inground pool types available: fiberglass, concrete, and vinyl liners. If concrete pools are your favorite, maybe you’ve encountered the term ‘gunite’ several times. At Remodel My Pool, we have been in the pool construction business for many years and know that there is much to learn about inground swimming pools before confidently settling on your favorite pool design in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, here is everything about gunite pools.
What is gunite?
First, it is essential to know that gunite is a type of concrete. In simple terms, gunite is a term that refers to the process of transforming concrete from the thick goo you see in the mixer, into a functional and beautiful swimming pool through a high pressure spraying technique. So, gunite is simply a process that builders use to apply concrete to various surfaces.
So, what is a gunite pool?
Gunite pools have been around since the mid 20th century (the 1940s). The return of millions of soldiers and their relocation to new suburbs with their families after World War 2 fueled the popularization of gunite pools.
So, gunite pools are inground concrete pools where sand and concrete mixture is sprayed over a rebar framework. With durability being gunite’s major aspect, gunite swimming pools consisting of this substance are built to last. That’s not all. Our gunite swimming pool design in Las Vegas comes with versatility that extends beyond the ability to create an unlimited range of shapes.
What does the process look like?
We begin building a gunite pool by digging or excavating. This step requires heavy machinery to quickly dig a hole based on your specifications (width, depth, and size). We also consider your preferable pool design in Las Vegas.
The next step involves the installation of plumbing for your pool design in Las Vegas and reinforcing the evacuated hole’s floor and walls with steel rebar. The result is a sturdy cage onto which our nozzleman can spray gunite.
Gunite-applied concrete is applied with sufficient pressure while mixing with water at a late stage. This way, a good nozzleman can spray the substance on different days while maintaining the concrete surface’s durability and attractiveness without risking structural defects.
How long is the gunite’s curing process?
Ideally, we leave the gunite to cure for several days before safely filling the concrete pool with water. With that said, the gunite-applied concrete must be left to cure for approximately one month or 28 days. During the curing stage, the concrete mixture’s molecules and particles completely bond, reaching their maximum durability and strength.
It is also essential to remember that gunite’s curing process also depends on the weather conditions. Unfavorable weather conditions can interfere with and prolong the curing process.
Bottom Line
Now that you know gunite pools and what to expect from them in terms of definition, curing process, and construction, you are in a better place to make an informed decision.
